Neptune and Triton. Voyager 2 image of the gas giant planet Neptune (upper frame) with its largest moon Triton visible just below centre. Neptune's atmosphere, like that of the other gas giant planets, comprises mainly hydrogen and helium, with traces of methane. It has the strongest winds of any solar system planet, reaching over 2000 kilometres per hour. Triton is a large moon,2700 kilometres in diameter, which has a surface temperature of -235 degrees Celsius. This image was taken when Voyager 2 was 4.86 million kilometres from Neptune on 29th August 1989 | |
