Comparative images of the Great Dark Spot on Neptune, made in orange light by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. Resolution is 100km per pixel. The images were taken over three rotations of Neptune, with 18 hours between each frame. The bright areas are cirrus clouds, formed from frozen methane, and exhibit large changes in structure over the period of observation. This suggests that the weather on Neptune is as dynamic as that on Earth, although the scale is much larger. The Great Dark Spot has a diameter roughly the same as the Earth (12,500 km) | |
