Voyager 2 false-colour image of Neptune in August 1989. It reveals the presence of a ubiquitous haze that covers the planet in a semi-transparent layer. The picture was made from 2 images taken through blue & green filters,& a filter that passes light at a wavelength absorbed by methane gas. Regions that appear white or bright red are those that reflect sunlight before it passes through a large quantity of methane. The red edge around the planet is where the haze scatters sunlight; at the centre of the disk, sunlight passes through the haze to the methane gas below. The white areas are high-altitude clouds,includ- ing one above the centre of the Great Dark Spot | |
