Saturn's rings. Artwork of the rings of Saturn,as seen from Saturn's upper cloud layers at a latitude of around 60 degrees. The Sun is seen shining through the Cassini Division in the rings. The most visible of Saturn's rings extend outwards from the gas giant planet for around 120,000 kilometres. The rings, which are only about one kilometre thick, consist of millions of chunks of rock and ice. Saturn's atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium. Its clouds are coloured by traces of methane. Cloud structures include a towering cumulonimbus (lower right) and a cyclonic storm system (lower left) | |
