Hubble Space Telescope image of the planet Saturn, showing an unusual,long-lived storm system known as the "white spot". The white spot is the large,elongated,reddish-white region lying along the planet's equator. The spot first appeared in late September 1990,growing rapidly over the next few days and spreading along the equator as well as climbing higher in the atmosphere. This image was taken on 9 November & combines images recorded in blue & infrared light; lower parts of the cloud appear blue & the region with high clouds appears red. The clouds which form the white spot are thought to be composed of ammonia ice crystals | |
