Saturn & its rings, photographed by the Voyager 1 spacecraft on October 18,1980. The image has been colour-enhanced to increase the visibility of the different bands of clouds in the planet's northern hemisphere. Spots visible in some areas are believed to resemble gigantic convective storms welling up from deep within Saturn's atmosphere. The blue band of cloud above the rings is Saturn's North Equatorial Belt; its distinct colour differ- ence may be due to a thicker layer of haze over the northern part of the Belt. The southern hemisphere of the planet appears bluer because of the increased scattering of sunlight on that area from Voyager's position | |
