Volcano erupting on Io,artwork. Io,the third largest of the moons of Jupiter,is one of the closest (422,000 kilometres). The powerful gravity of Jupiter and tidal forces from the other moons, create huge tides on Io,powering its volcanoes. These can eject matter, mostly sulphur, over 100 kilometres into space to form a yellow trail along Io's orbit. Away from the volcanoes, temperatures are -140 degrees Celsius. Io has a thin atmosphere of sulphur dioxide and a gravity that is less than a fifth of that on Earth. Jupiter,a gas giant of hydrogen and helium,is the fifth planet from the Sun.
