Voyager image,in simulated natural colour,of Haemus Mons,a mountain near the south pole of Io,one of Jupiter's moons. Haemus Mons is 200 km across and 9000 metres high; the height of Mount Everest,on a world only one quarter the Earth's size. The mountain must be made of rock (silicates),rather than the extremely sulphur- rich lava which covers most of the numerous volcanoes on Io,because a sulphur mountain cannot stand more than 1000 metres high - it would flow out sideways under its own weight. The white deposit on the mountain is sulphur dioxide snow, ejected by some of the smaller volcanoes on Io | |
