Enhanced natural colour image of Io's largest volcano,Pele, taken by Voyager 1. The volcanic vent,Pele itself,is just at the top of the wedge of mountains, where the dark fans of erupting matter begin. It is at a temperature of some 380 degrees centigrade. The ejected material falls back over a region of surrounding terrain 1400 km across. This heart-shaped region is only an area of superficial deposits: despite its appearance at first glance,it is not a volcanic cone. By the time of Voyager 2's flyby, four months later, eruptions had filled out the notch at the bottom right of this region | |
