Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9/Jupiter collision. Infrared image of Jupiter showing many impact sites ('splashes') due to fragments of Comet Shoemaker- Levy 9 in July 1994. The collision sites form a diagonal line just above the planet's south polar region. Impact Q1 (19.59 GMT,20 July) is on the limb at lower right. Just to the left of this is Impact R (05.22 GMT,21 July). Other impact sites are not identified. The Great Red Spot is the red patch on the limb near lower left just below the equator.
