Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Infrared image (3.5 microns) taken by the Keck telescope of two impacts (round bright spots at bottom left) between fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter. The comet broke into more than 20 fragments during a close encounter with Jupiter in July 1992. The brightest spot is the aftermath of comet fragment A,the first to collide with the planet on July 16,1994,at about 10:00 GMT. The other spot is the impact of fragment C. The impacts released energy equivalent to about one million hydrogen bombs. The polar caps and a storm system (centre right) are also visible | |
