Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The famous Great Red Spot (GRS,upper right) in the atmosphere of Jupiter, taken on March 1 1979 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. The GRS is an enormous eddy system which has been visible ever since the first telescopes revealed its existence over 200 years ago. This Voyager frame shows the complexity of the flow patterns in the GRS and other smaller eddies nearby. The GRS is about 13,000 kilometres across,or about three times the size of the Earth. This image was taken from a distance of 5 million kilometres, and shows features around 100km across | |
