Voyager 2 spacecraft photograph of the southern hemisphere of the planet Jupiter taken on June 25th 1979 at a distance of 12 million kilometers (8 million miles) from the planet. The small satellite seen orbiting Jupiter is Io,the innermost of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. It is approximately the size of the Earth's moon. The red, orange and yellow colours of Io are thought to be deposits of sulphur and sulphur compounds produced by the volcanic activity associated with this moon. Voyager discovered that Io is the most volcanically active planetary body in the solar system, with continuous eruptions larger than those occurring on Earth | |
