Earhart rock,Mars. False-colour image from the Mars exploration rover Opportunity of a rock dubbed the Earhart rock, found in Endurance Crater. Scientists do not yet know how the cracks were formed but there are a number of possibilities. One of the most likely is that they are a result of the impact which created the crater. The other most probable is that they indicate the presence of water on the surface of Mars, forming when the wet rock dried. Photographed on the 4th September 2004 | |
