Mars surface from the Opportunity rover (partly seen in lower frame). This 360 degree panorama shows the rim of the small crater in which the rover landed. The rim of the crater is estimated to be around ten metres from the rover,with the total diameter of the crater being some 20 metres. Just beneath the horizon across centre is an outcrop of rocks. The sandy "soil" in the crater is made up of a combination of fine red grains and coarser grey grains. Marks made by the lander's airbags when it rolled into the crater are at upper right. This image is a composite of 225 individual frames. Opportunity landed in the Mars' Meridiani Planum area on 24th January 2004
