Mars surface seen during the descent of the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity's lander to the planet's surface on 24 January 2004. The circular object (dark, upper right) is believed to be an impact crater near where the rover landed. This image was taken by the Descent Image Motion Estimation System (DIMES) camera on the bottom of the lander,at an altitude of 1404 metres. Images taken by this camera aided onboard software as it decreased the lander's speed during its descent to Mars. The area shown is about 1.2 kilometres wide, and is in an area known as Meridiani Planum, east of Valles Marineris and near the Martian equator | |
