Sunrise over Mars. Artwork of the Sun rising over the surface of Mars. Mars' surface is largely made up of dusty soil and irregular boulders, which are predominantly red/brown due to their iron oxide content. Here, blue carbon dioxide ice can be seen in the shade of some of the boulders. Mars is much colder than Earth, with an average temperature of around -23 degrees Celsius, and its carbon dioxide atmosphere is very thin. It is thought that in the past it was warmer on Mars, and that life may have developed there. Numerous probes have tested the surface of Mars for signs that life may have existed, but no evidence has yet been found | |
