Martian erosion features. Mars Express perspective view of wind erosion features (dark lines) on Mars. These features are caused by Martian 'dust devils',which are tornado-like weather phenomena. They remove the surface layer of dust, revealing darker dust layers underneath. The tracks can be up to twenty kilometres long. This area is next to a large impact crater (rim at top right) in the Promethei Terra area of Mars. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003 | |
