Martian volcanic cliff. Mars Express perspective view of the scarp (cliff-like wall) surrounding the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars. The scarp is up to six kilometres high in places, and extends for some 550 kilometres around the volcano. Olympus Mons gradually slopes upwards from this scarp wall and reaches a height of 24 kilometres, the tallest mountain in the solar system. Erosion features are clearly seen on the cliff edge. Mars is a cold, desert world. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003 | |
