Martian geology. Mars Express image of ridges and canyons (technically horsts and grabens) in the Acheron Fossae region of Mars. These features and the larger craters are tens of kilometres wide. The horsts and grabens are caused by ancient movements in the Martian crust. This area is 1000 kilometres north of Olympus Mons,on the edge of the Tharsis Bulge,an area uplifted by intense volcanic activity in the past. This bulging caused the fractured landscape seen here. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003 | |
