Colour-enhanced 'fish-eye' view of Mars. Mosaic of images made by the Viking Orbiter, centred on the Valles Marineris canyon system. This point perspective image simulates a 'fish-eye' lens view from a spacecraft about 2500 km above the surface, and covers an area of about 60 degrees latitude by 60 degrees longitude. Valles Marineris runs across centre frame, with the smaller dark Hebes Chasma above. Running north (top) from Hebes are ancient river channels. Near the top left are two circular dark features, the volcanoes Ascraeus Mons (upper) and Pavonis Mons (lower). The large dark area at far right is Chryse Planitia | |
