False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a micrometeorite impact crater on the surface of basalt moon rock. Basalt is a fine-grained,some- times glassy basic igneous rock. Here,at the site of the micrometeorite crater on this moon rock, the "glass" component melted due to the heat caused by the impact. Before it solidified, the site became smooth, with some degree of outward splashing of "glass". This sample of lunar rock was brought back from the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts.
