Far side of the Moon,Apollo 11 orbital photograph. NASA's Apollo 11 was the first mission to put a man on the Moon,in July 1969. Whilst orbiting the Moon, the astronauts also viewed the side of the Moon facing away from the Earth, known as the dark side. Gravitational forces have caused the Moon's spin to be synchronised with its orbit around Earth,so that the same side is always visible. Many impact craters, the result of collisions with objects in space, are visible. This includes a large, young crater towards the bottom of the image which is probably just several million years old | |
