Far side of the Moon, photographed from the Apollo 8 spacecraft in 1968. The Moon's orbit of Earth is locked so that only one hemisphere faces Earth at all times. The far side was seen for the first time when probes photographed it in the late 1950s,and the majority of the features on that side of the Moon are unnamed. Apollo 8 lasted from 21st-27th December 1968,and carried James Lovell,William Anders and Frank Borman to the Moon. They orbited it ten times but did not land on its surface | |
