Lunar eclipse. Composite image of the Moon moving from left to right during a total lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters the cone of shadow cast into space by the Earth. The part of the Moon in shadow does not entirely disappear because light is refracted onto its surface by the Earth's atmosphere. Since red light is scattered less than blue light,it gives the Moon a copper red colour. Photographed in Turku,Finland on 8 November 2003 | |
