Partial lunar eclipse. Time-lapse image of the Moon travelling across the sky during a partial lunar eclipse over an urban area. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters into the cone of shadow cast into space by the Earth. The Moon does not entirely disappear because sunlight is refracted onto its surface by the Earth's atmosphere. Since red light is scattered less than blue light, the Moon has a copper red colour.
