Comparison of ultraviolet and visible light images of the Moon. The ultraviolet (left) and visible light images show similar reflectance patterns, with impact crater ejecta showing bright and lava flows in the 'seas' seen as dark patches. The main difference is in the highland areas, which appear dark in UV light but brighter in visible light. The UV image was produced by the Southwest Research Institute,Texas, and was made using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope carried by the Astro-2 Shuttle mission in March 1995. The visible light image was produced by the Lick Observatory,California | |
