False-colour mosaic radar image of the Alpha Regio region of Venus. Seven dome-like hills are seen, averaging 25km in diameter and 750 metres in height. They may have been formed by successive lava eruptions, with cooling of the surface causing the radial faulting. A different interpretation is that the domes were formed by lava intrusions just below the surface. The bright margins may indicate the presence of rock debris at the base of the slopes. The image was made by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft during several successive orbits of the planet in 1990. Surface resolution is 120 metres per pixel | |
