Computer-transformed image of a lowland plain on Venus, made from data acquired by the Magellan radar mapping spacecraft in August 1990. The computer has processed the image to give a northward view with a slant angle of 10 degrees. The image width is about 40km,and stretches 600km into the distance. The plain is cut across by many complex canyon systems, probably formed as the planet's crust was pulled by extensional forces. Some valleys in the centre and far distance have filled with younger,radar-dark lava flows. The canyons are typically 5-10 km wide and 50-100km long | |
