Image of the disc of Venus as seen through a small telescope, when the planet was close to the horizon. In this position the light coming from Venus must pass through an increasing mass of air: the refraction effects become significant and this produces the separation of colours visible here. Refraction is larger for blue and green light than for red light. As a result the blue image of the disc of Venus appears to be slightly higher above the horizon than the red image | |
