Ceres. Artwork of the asteroid Ceres, the largest of the asteroids in the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt is a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter that contains thousands of small rocky bodies. Ceres has a diameter of around 940 kilometres. It is thought that the asteroid belt comprises material left over from the formation of the solar system. The fragments may be building blocks of a planet that was prevented from forming by the massive tidal forces of nearby Jupiter. Ceres was discovered in January 1801 | |
