Ceres. Computer illustration of the asteroid Ceres, largest of the asteroids. This rocky body orbits the Sun between the orbits of Mars (seen at upper left) and Jupiter,in a region known as the asteroid belt. It has a diameter of around 940 kilometres. It is thought the asteroid belt is formed from remnants from the creation of the solar system. The fragments were prevented from forming another planet by the immense tidal forces exerted on the region by the massive and relatively nearby Jupiter. Ceres was discovered in January 1801 | |
