| Asteroid Ida and its moon. False-colour image gathered by the Galileo spacecraft showing Asteroid 243 Ida and its tiny moon Dactyl (right). The image was made at violet and two infrared wavelengths,with strong colouring used to highlight surface geology. The reddish brown of most of the surface indicates iron-bearing minerals,with less iron in the blue-tinted areas around many of the impact craters. Dactyl,although not identical,appears similar in overall reflectance and general spectral type,suggesting it is made of the same basic rock type as Ida.
