Sikhote-Alin meteorite. Artwork of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite impact which occurred on 12 February 1947 near Novopoltavka in Siberia,Russia. The glowing meteorite is leaving a trail of smoke and dust behind it. It is thought that the iron meteo- rite originally weighed 200-300 tonnes. It broke up as it fell through the atmosphere, the frag- ments producing 106 craters & cutting down entire trees. There were thousands of fragments, and over 25 tonnes of iron were recovered from the impact sites. Most meteorites are fragments from asteroids or comets, and they can give valuable information about the composition of the early solar system | |
