The six colour insets show the images of the planets; Venus,Earth,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus & Neptune. Mercury,Mars & Pluto are not shown. Voyager 1 was launched on 5 September 1977 and visited Jupiter & Saturn before swinging upwards out of the plane of the solar system. This image,taken on 14 February,1990,represents its final view of the solar system as it speeds off into outer space. In around 40,000 years,it will pass close to the star AC+79 3888 | |
