Mars Surveyor 2001 Orbiter. Artwork of the Mars Surveyor 2001 Orbiter in orbit around Mars. This probe is due for launch in March 2001. It is designed to study the mineralogy and rock composition of Mars. It will carry the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS,upper left) on a long boom, and the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) attached to the main body. THEMIS will look for active or previously active areas on Mars, such as hydrothermal vents and dry lake beds. GRS will find the elemental composition of the Martian surface. This data will be used to plan later landings | |
