Huygens probe. Technicians with the heat shield of the Huygens probe,a craft that will enter the at- mosphere of Saturn's moon Titan after being released from the Cassini spacecraft. The shield has 160 insulating silica tiles. The shield surface will be heated to 1800-2000 degrees Celsius (C) as Huygens enters Titan's atmosphere, but the instruments protected by it will not become hotter than 150 C. The Cassini/Huygens mission is due to be launched in October 1997,and is expected to reach Saturn in July 2004 | |
