Artist's impression of the Galileo descent probe drifting through the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter. The Galileo spacecraft is due to be launched by the space shuttle on October 12,1989. On reaching Jupiter,it will release the probe to study the planet's atmosphere during a 60-minute parachute descent. As it drifts down, the probe will spin at 5 revolutions a minute,& transmit measurements to the Orbiter circling high above Jupiter's atmosphere. The Orbiter will continue circling Jupiter for at least 20 months, investigating the planet & its satellites. In the artwork, the "star" in the top right corner is the Sun | |
