Artist's impression of ROSAT in orbit. ROSAT (Roentgensatellit) is a German/UK/NASA X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) telescope in Earth orbit. Its X-ray imaging systems share a lens which consists of four concentric grazing incidence mirrors, with a focal length of 2400mm. A similar lens,of 525mm focal length,is used for EUV observations. ROSAT was launched on a Delta rocket on 1 June 1990,and is expected to detect over 100,000 new X-ray sources. The satellite was named after Wilhelm Roentgen (1845- 1923),the discoverer of X-rays | |
