Artist's impression of NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) astronomical satellite. EUVE will carry four UV telescopes, and will conduct a 12-18 month all-sky survey of extreme UV sources in space. An initial all-sky survey will identify UV sources that might warrant further investigation. Most extreme UV objects detected so far are stars in advanced stages of evolution, such as white dwarfs. EUVE was launched on a Delta II rocket on 7 June 1992,and is scheduled to be visited by the Space Shuttle in February 1994. The visit will allow for payload and instrument replacement where necessary | |
