Ulysses and Jupiter. Artwork of the unmanned solar spacecraft Ulysses swinging around Jupiter (left) to attain a polar solar orbit. It passed through the volcanic sulphur trail (orange, cloudy) of the Io Plasma Torus that fills the orbit of the Jovian moon Io (upper left). Another moon,Europa,is at lower right. Ulysses was launched in 1990 to study the Sun and its solar wind outside the ecliptic plane of the planetary orbits. It passed over the north and south poles of the Sun (1994-5) at a minimum period of solar activity. A second set of polar fly-bys (2000-1) studied a maximum period of solar activity. Ulysses is a joint ESA and NASA mission | |
