Ulysses. Model of the Ulysses solar explorer spacecraft orbiting the Sun. Ulysses was launched by space shuttle in October 1990. Its initial trajectory took it on a 14-month flight to Jupiter, where the giant planet's gravity was used as a slingshot to hurl the spacecraft out of the plane of the Solar System and back towards the Sun. It crossed the Sun's southern pole in June 1994,the equator in early 1995 and the northern pole in June 1995 - never getting closer than 120 million miles. On board Ulysses were instruments designed to observe Sun's surface, magnetic fields and solar wind | |
