Cut-away diagram of NASA's Space Telescope, which, until the loss of Challenger, was due for launch on the Shuttle in late 1986. With Space Telescope, astronomers will be able to observe some 300 times the volume of space that can now be seen with the largest ground-based telescopes. In addition to this,Space Telescope will produce observations of much higher resolution (detail) because it will not suffer the blurring effect of the Earth's atmosphere. The image shows the shutter, the back of the 2.4 metre primary mirror, the secondary mirror, the stray light baffling arrangement and the electronic detectors (near end, behind main mirror).
