Solar neutrino research. A researcher holds a counter for detecting germanium atoms created in the GALLEX experiment. Located under 1400 metres of rock in the Gran Sasso Laboratory,Italy,GALLEX is looking for neutrinos emitted as a by- product of nuclear fusion in the Sun. It consists of a tank containing 54 tonnes of gallium tri- chloride. Solar neutrinos interact with the atoms of gallium and give rise to a radioactive isotope of germanium. This process creates about one atom of germanium a day. The germanium atoms are chemically extracted every 3 weeks and counted by proportional counters like the one held here | |
