Owens Valley VLBA radio telescope. Man stands on the dish antenna of a radio telescope which forms part of the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) network. This telescope is located at Owens Valley in California,USA. It weighs 240 tonnes,is nearly as tall as a ten-storey building, and has a dish with a 25 metre (82 feet) diameter. This telescope obtains measurements of centimetre long radio wavelengths. The VLBA is a network consisting of ten identical antennae such as this one, located at stations from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands. The VLBA network simulates a giant telescope by combining the data obtained by each individual telescope | |
