View of the heliostat of the McMath solar telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory,Arizona. Largest its kind in the world, the telescope's tower stands 110 feet (33. 5 metres) high. The 60-inch (1.5m) image-forming heliostat - or tracking mirror - reflects the Sun's image down a diagonal 500- foot (152m) path inside the telescope. Some 300 feet (91. 5m) underground,a paraboloidal mirror beams the image to the observing room where astronomers study the Sun's magnetic fields, motions and composition. The dome of the 4-metre Mayall telescope is visible in the background | |
