United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope. An astronomer kneels at the eyepiece of the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST) at Siding Spring,Australia. It consists of a spherical primary mirror with a diameter of 1.8 metres and an achromatic correcting lens of 1.2 metres. Schmidt telescopes are virtually free from light aberrations and are characterised by a large observational field. UKST covers about 40 square degrees of sky.
