Mayall telescope. Time exposure image of star trails over the dome of the Mayall 4-metre (160- inch) telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observa- tory in Arizona,USA. This is the largest optical telescope at Kitt Peak. Its high altitude (over 2000 metres) & clear desert skies mimimise atmospheric interference to incoming light. It is housed in a building which is 38 metres high and 33 metres wide; this lifts the telescope above heat haze near the ground. The Mayall telescope was first used in 1973. The observatory is operat- ed by a consortium of American universities and forms part of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO). Photographed in 1997 | |
