The time ball will drop at exactly 13:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) every day. It was introduced in 1811 by the then Astronomer Royal,John Pond. Greenwich observatory was founded in 1675 by Charles II who appointed an Astronomer Royal to run it. It was the Astronomer Royal's job to keep accurate tables of the positions of the Moon and stars for use in navigation by English ships.
