Sundial. Stone sundial attached to the wall of a building. The sundial measures time using a shadow formed by a projection which is located where the lines on the sundial's face come together. This shadow moves across the face of the sundial as the Sun moves across the sky; the lines on the sundial each correspond to a certain time. The hour of the day which each line represents here have been marked in Roman numerals. The time shown here is four o'clock in the afternoon. Photographed on the Ile de Re in western France | |
